We extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Dr. Mrs. Sumana Wijekoon (1937-2025).

Dr. Mrs. Sumana Wijekoon was among the early members of the Department of Zoology, joining shortly after its establishment in 1963. She is well-known as a firm teacher and a sociable person very much concerned in student welfare. Her service in the Department spanned over 39 years. She was the Head of the department of Zoology , Faculty of Science from 1998 to 2001. Trained in the UK as a Nematologist, Dr. Wijekoon’s services were sought by many agriculturists. Shortly after retirement in 2002 she moved to Colombo. After a brief illness, Dr. Wijekoon passed away on 08th June 2025 at the age of 88 years. She will be remembered by many generations of Zoologists.

She was an active member of the Executive Committee of the AAUP (Alumni Association of University of Peradeniya) for many years from 1990 to 1997 and held the treasurer post in 97/98.
